Engagement Session

Planning your

I can't begin to tell you how important this time is for us. It gives you both a chance to be in front of my camera, learn my posing style and prompts before the wedding day. This not only makes for smooth portrait time on the wedding day but it most importantly MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE. Not only that, but we get to create something so special together. You’re going to be married for years but you only get to be engaged for this short period of time. So let's make the most of it! I’m so excited to capture the only time in your life when you get to be fiancés.

I'm so excited to be working with you and I can’t wait for our time together during your engagement session! It’s normal to be a little nervous about your session. Even I still get nervous before having my photos taken - and I do this for a living! But don't worry, this time together is super casual and fun.

While these photos are great for save-the-dates, I’ve taken engagement photos anywhere from 18 months in advance to a few weeks before the wedding. All that matters is that you get in front of my camera before the wedding day. THAT is precisely how we create the best images when you tie the knot!

I’ll cover the Where, What, When plus so much more! So let's dive in!

a note about this guide

Welcome

The Guys

a note to

I get it. Having your picture taken for 1-2 hours is probably not in your "Top 10" favorite things to do during your downtime. And at first you might feel sort of awkward being in front of the camera. But I think you’ll find that by the end of the session, it’s a lot easier than you thought, and you even had a little fun. I'm happy to say, 100% of Grooms in front of my camera actually have a good time. I look forward to your session because it’s a great opportunity for us all to hang out a bit before the wedding day!

Engagement sessions can take place anywhere from immediately following a proposal to just a few weeks before the wedding. I’ve found that there isn’t a “good” or “bad” time to take your photos. I normally plan sessions based on a particular “look” a couple has in mind, spring flowers for example, or based on schedules.

Sessions typically last about 90 minutes and when possible, I love to begin sessions about two hours before sunset. I prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. The first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot.

I schedule sessions during what we believe will be the best light of the day - which means that it’s super important to be on time! If you’re late to an evening session, we could run out of light before we’ve finished shooting and if your session takes place in the morning, the sun gets more harsh as it rises.

Is there a "good" time to take photos?

TIME & LIGHT

MY FAVORITE SEASON. Although Spring begins in March, I typically don't shoot engagement sessions for another six weeks because the weather is usually still quite chilly! When I schedule spring sessions, I typically schedule a TARGET WEEK then as we get closer, we determine the exact date based on weather!

fresh flowers and sunny skies

Spring

In spite of the heat, I'm a big fan of summer sessions! The late night sunset glow is the best! Because of the later sunset time, sessions usually start around 6 PM. If your session is scheduled in the summer, I recommend bringing extra makeup and maybe a few dabbing tissues to make sure you stay fresh throughout your entire session.

hot days and late nights

Summer

Fall is definitely the most popular time of the year in the Midwest and because of the perfect weather and colorful leaves, my schedule typically books up VERY FAST. If you have your heart set on a fall engagement session, I recommend scheduling it out as soon as you book!

crisp air and colorful trees

Fall

If you're wanting planning to take your engagement photos during the winter, keep in mind that if your sessions takes place in the evening, we would begin shooting as early as 3 PM to catch the sunset. I recommend dressing in layers so that in between photos you can warm up. Make sure to bring a little extra makeup and tissues in case your nose gets runny!

Winter

While most engagement sessions are shot between early April and late October, sessions can take place all year! Most of my couples choose a season based on the location where they want to shoot or the look they want in their photos!

Think Outside the Box

location

I encourage you to brainstorm unique locations that you might have special access to that most people don’t. For example, maybe you, or someone in your personal or professional network, has permission to a location that would otherwise be off-limits, like a beautiful private estate, country club or resort. Maybe it’s a family ranch or an upscale hotel with a rooftop view -- the sky is the limit!

Spend a few minutes thinking about it and checking around. You’ll be surprised with what you come up with. Plus, if something seems out of reach, just remember: you never know until you ask! If you get stuck or need inspiration, check out Instagram! Geo-location tags are amazing for finding secret spots!

The biggest factor in creating the vibe you want for your session!  Like you see throughout this guide, most of my clients choose to showcase the natural beauty of our home state. There are great options all around so even if you've never seen me photograph in a specific spot before, I am always up for exploring a new spot together!

Outfits

tips for looking your best

When picking outfits I recommend picking your outfits first, then pick his outfits based around yours. And also, keep it simple! This draws the focus to YOU in the photos and not too many contrasting patterns or color in your clothing. For example, if you want to wear a floral maxi dress, maybe just throw your guy in khakis and a white button-up to balance out the large pattern!

Generally couples pick two outfits for an engagement session: a formal outfit (dress and suit) and one that is a little more casual (jeans or khakis). I recommend saving your favorite outfit for later in the session. That's when my couples feel most comfortable and we get the absolute BEST photos of the night!

Your outfits will determine the look of your entire session. Wearing dark or bright colors will give your images a heavier, bold look. While pastels and neutrals will give your session that light & airy style!

Wardrobe Tips

You know when you go to weddings together and say "we never get dressed up, we need to get a picture tonight" Well, that's what we're doing for your engagement photos! This is the time to get some gorgeous, timeless portraits of the two of you during this one season of engagement!

Have you thought about rocking a gorgeous sequin gown, tulle skirt or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up! Remember: There is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your portrait session, so don’t be afraid to have some fun!

I always recommend two outfits, one formal and one casual.

Dress it Up

Wardrobe Tips

Dresses and skirts look most stunning because they really flatter every female body, especially on camera — which is probably why the red carpet is always full of so many dresses and not very many pantsuits! I recommend avoiding pants and shorts for your session and saying yes to a dress or two instead.

Long, full-length, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to your photos. Especially when juxtaposed with nature in open fields or beaches! Consider softer fabrics like chiffon or tulle which allow for beautiful movement!

Beauty Tips

Professional hair and makeup is on the top of most of my brides’ checklist because it looks amazing on camera and removes the stress of getting ready on your own! Whether it's a pair false eye lashes or a fresh blow out -- professional hair and makeup will give you an extra boost of confidence in front of the camera!

Most of my brides feel like their professional makeup is “too much” at first, since it’s more than you would wear on a normal day, or that they're false lashes look too big, so if you feel that way at the beginning, don’t worry! Good makeup artists know how to get it all just right for the camera and you'll love the final result.

Leave it to the professionals

SHOES // Heels lengthen legs and I always, always ALWAYS suggest NUDE shoes! Any other color will stand out versus blending into your skin tone.  If you're not into heels, I still suggest a nude or brown-toned shoe!

SPRAY TANS // Although it might seem counter-intuitive, I recommend skipping the spray tan before your session (and wedding!) because it tends to photograph orange even when it’s applied subtly and professionally. Your true skin tone will photograph the most beautifully and naturally, I promise!

LIP COLOR // Even if you're not a frequent lipstick wearer, I highly suggest wearing lipstick and keeping it on your for touching up! Your natural lip color will barely show up in photos. And a nice lip line can really clean up your look!

CONFIDENCE // Regardless of their shape or size, everyone has an area they are self-conscious about! Recognize what area that is in advance is key and choose flattering silhouettes and colors that complement your natural features! This is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos!

Accessories & Beauty

For the Gents

Men look most striking in a well-tailored suit. If he doesn’t have one, now’s the perfect time to invest in something he’ll wear for the rest of his life! The best part? It’s a lot less expensive than you might think! While custom suits can cost thousands of dollars, some of the most well-known brands have off-the-rack suits in their stores for a fraction of the price. Solid shades of gray, black or navy are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye. I also recommend nixing the graphics and logos.

A solid color sweater layered over a patterned button up is a great way to stay warm and stylish during the cooler months.

A Good Suit

For the Gents

MIX IT UP // I love the look of a suit coat, blazer or sport coat paired with a different pant color! It adds some extra visual interest, and breaks up the color tones. I'm a big fan of this fresh take on a timeless classic.

SHOES // Brown leather dress shoes complement almost every look, whether he’s wearing a full suit or a blazer and colored pants. Ties, bowties, pocket squares, colored socks, belts, tie clips, suspenders, vests and watches are sharp complements to any outfit for men and boys alike. If you bring two outfits to the session, you can start with a traditional necktie and belt, then switch to suspenders and a bow tie for your second look. If two looks are too stressful, no problem! One will do the trick! You can still mix and match accessories to complement both of your dresses without doing a full change during the session. So, either way, it's a win.

Head to Toe

This outfit works great because the heaviness of his jacket creates BALANCE with the neutral, pastel colors.

Here comes SUMMER! This outfit photographs so well! White jeans are a recommended option if you want a pants outfit! It breaks up all the blue jean on bottom plus gives all the summer feels! *bonus* Add a bold, red lip for a pop of color!

If he is going to wear jeans, a DARK WASH looks best. Then add a maxi dress and a floppy hat for a cute casual summer look!

KEEP IT SIMPLE. There is nothing better than keeping the focus OFF the clothes and ON YOU. I love a light jean and white top for my brides. A casual but still kind of "bridal" look.

A PRINT is a fun way to spice up your outfits! I recommend pairing it with neutrals for a balanced look!

KEEP IT SIMPLE. Like the last slide, a pattern is great for ONE of you! And keeping the rest of the outfit more monochromatic makes YOU stand out in your photos! I'm a huge fan of pumps and skinny jeans; it's one of my favorite looks!

Another great example of adding a pop of color to a monotoned outfit! Also, LAYERING anything looks very high-end and also photographs BEAUTIFULLY. Layer shirts with sweaters and multiple necklaces for a sophisticated look!

Pets

YES. YES. YES. I 100% believe that pets belong in all the wedding things!

I understand how important our fur babies are which is why I LOVE when my couples choose to incorporate their pets into their session!!

Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we’ll need to choose a pet friendly location. I recommend planning for your pet to be at the first part of your session and then either dropping them off or having a friend take them home. We won’t have your pet in every single photo so it’s also nice to have a friend available to hold him or her in between shots.

If you’re going to bring a pet, I highly recommend exercising your pet before the session and bringing your pets favorite toy or treats! Depending on your pet’s fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.

I LOVE when my couples bring a fun, unique element to their session! Want your engagement images to be super unique and look more editorial? Bring a little extra something with you! Whether you want to incorporate larger items like a vintage bike, or smaller ones like blankets or hats, even planning for just one extra styled item could be a fun way to make your session more unique!

Ring Cleaning

Be sure to get that gorgeous ring cleaned before your session! Your jeweler should do it for free! That one piece of jewelry will be the star of the show so let's make sure it's sparkly and clean! I like to grab a couple detail shots of that gorgeous ring on your hand so make sure it's sparkling!

Coordinating schedules is tough but throw bad weather into the mix and it's almost impossible!

I typically like to schedule a TARGET WEEK (M-F) for your session to take place. Then about a week before, we decide the exact date depending on weather! I’ve found this is the best way to make sure you get the look you have in mind for your photos!

I know it takes a lot of time to get ready for your session and it’s the worst to get dressed up and drive out to your session only to have it rain.

If this doesn't work with your schedules or appointments then we'll schedule a date and work with it!

Inclement Weather

Working with Mother Nature

Save the Dates

If you're hoping to use your engagement photos for your Save the Dates, I recommend scheduling your session at least two months before they need to be mailed. Between inclement weather, editing, designing, printing and delivery, two months is generally a safe amount of time to make sure they get out in a timely manner.

When it comes to posing for your engagement session, you don’t need to worry about a thing! I’ll guide you through the entire process beginning with “poses” that are super easy and natural. If I tell you to do something that feels a little funny, it’s probably because I know it’s going to make the two of you laugh - and that’s the photo I'm actually looking for!

Throughout your session, I’ll keep an eye on your hair, makeup and outfits to make sure things stay in place. My goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible, like we're not even taking photos!

"What Do I Do With My Hands?"

posing

You’re already going to be all dressed up, why not take advantage of it? If you're anything like my husband and I, you don't look this good very often so why not grab dinner afterwards?

I know the wedding planning process can feel all-consuming, so take some time after the session just for the two of you to relax and have some fun together.

ENGAGEMENTS on the blog

I can't wait to hang out with you both!

I know I just gave you a TON to think about but I created this guide to help make your engagement session experience something you’ll look back fondly on for years and years to come! At the end of the day, though, the location you choose and the outfits you select won’t matter nearly as much as the memories you make together. Your future marriage is the most important thing to me and I want your engagement session to be a time for you to just be yourselves and enjoy it. It'll be a casual, relaxed time for us to have fun together and laugh a lot!
